In this week’s social report we’re celebrating World Emoji Day, a day where we can share our love for the little yellow faces that help us express ourselves better than we ever have before (seriously, how did we share gossip with our friends without the steaming tea emoji?) The world truly embraced this day of emojis with the new iOS update featuring redheaded emojis (can we get a “finally!”), Twitter overflowing with love for the underappreciated aerial tram emoji, and Instagram adding emoji reacts to stories, a la Facebook. In addition to Emoji Day, the internet also celebrated Malala Yousafzai’s 21st birthday and her creation of an Instagram account! And while YouTube began to embrace the Twitter trend of hashtags, Twitter purged 70 million accounts. We’ve got the full roundup for you below:
1. Here are the 70 new emoji coming to iOS
by @RachelKaser via @TheNextWeb
Finally, iPhone users will be getting a mango emoji. In the new iOS update, coming out “later this year” according to Apple, there are 70 new emojis ranging from a freezing face, a party hat with a noisemaker, a Nazar amulet for warding off the evil eye, and an infinity sign. Once this update rolls out, we’ll be one step closer to being able to communicate solely through emojis (our dream).
2. Malala joins Instagram to Celebrate 21st Birthday
by @nicolemichele5 via @Mashable
Happy belated, Malala! The Pakistani activist celebrated her 21st birthday in Brazil by creating an Instagram account. Her first posts have been amazing and we’re looking forward to more inspirational ‘grams to grace our feed.
3. Why We Should Care About Twitter’s Purge Of 70 Million Accounts
by @ddisparte via @Forbes
Twitter just purged 70 million accounts — 20% of their Monthly Active Users. Hopefully, these purges will help social media developers learn how to weed out bots and spam accounts so our feeds can be a more uncluttered place.
4. Instagram’s Adding ‘Reactions’ Style Quick-Response Emojis to Instagram Stories
by @adhutchinson via @socialmedia2day
With the use of emoji reactions on Facebook steadily rising, Instagram is now testing out emoji reacts for stories. However, some have noted that there is no “angry” reaction, alluding to the perhaps more positive direction Instagram is trying to go… or the fact that the angry emoji isn’t used by many on Facebook.
5. YouTube begins embracing the hashtag
by @mariella_moon via @engadget
Hashtags are officially everywhere. YouTube just added a new feature where creators are able to add hashtags to the tops of their videos, but they have stated that they will be taking down any that are misleading, sexually explicit, or relating to harassment.
MM’s Pick of the Week!
There’s always some outpouring of support being tweeted about, but this past week it’s been for something you might not have expected: an emoji. The @LeastUsedEmojiBot, a bot on Twitter, has shared with the world Twitter’s least used emoji: the aerial tramway . It’s been the least used for 75 days and counting. This has spawned an outpouring of support for the poor transportation emoticon.

To proclaim their support, some have been formulating new ways to use the emoji in everyday situations, and people are just tweeting the emoji left and right.
apparently is the least used emoji so i’d like to know what can each & every one of us do to be more inclusive of in our daily vernacular??

People are even putting the aerial tramway in their names, hoping to spread the aerial tram love with their followers. Frankly at this point, we’re surprised it’s still on the bottom.

But then that begs the question: what will be the next least-used emoji?
