#MMIntern Spotlight: Shreya Katuri

Working with interns every semester is one of our favorite parts about life at Metter Media. Finding their talents, learning their personalities and developing their interests is all a part of our job as intern hosts at Metter Media. After four years of interns, we’re diving in to see where they are now, after Metter Media. Our next spotlight is Shreya Katuri, an expert in marketing and strategy who joined Metter Media in 2016 and continues to amaze us today. Continue reading and see what our #MMIntern Shreya is doing now.

What are you doing since you left Metter Media — jobs, schools, etc.? Any fun projects?

Post my internship with Metter Media, I graduated from grad school with an MA in Integrated Marketing Communications from Emerson College and worked as a Marketing Associate with Piaggio Fast Forward, Boston for a year. I moved to India in 2018 and have been working with LinkedIn, India as an Online Ads Strategist since then. I haven’t had the time to start any new projects, but check out @artonabox — I’ve been working on it since 2014! Major plans for it in the coming year.

How are you using social media today?

For a variety of reasons (the usual: sharing memes with friends, checking the news on Twitter, networking on LinkedIn etc., Facebook and Whatsapp for random and daily conversations), but most importantly, I’m consciously using it to become a more informed person. With the amount of information that is shared online these days, it’s important to filter out distractions and information-overload situations. Reading horoscopes is a guilty pressure, so contact me if you want to have a separate conversation w.r.t to that! 😛

What is the most important thing you learned at Metter Media?

Metter Media always tops my list of ‘favorite places to intern at,’ and this I fully attribute to the people, the positive environment they’ve fostered for their interns over the years, the amazing work they do and all the creative energy they hold.

Social media is not just an Instagram post, a tweet or a simple hashtag — it goes beyond that, and that’s what I like to believe Metter Media taught me.

There’s a certain level of dedication, strategy and patience you need to execute social media campaigns.

What advice do you have for future interns/people entering the field?

Firstly, know the social media platforms your clients would work best on — read up best practices, do competitive market research and fill the gaps to come up with the best results. Be open to experimentation and new ideas, ask for case studies and read up industry news. Most importantly, read Metter Media weekly updates and keep a check on their daily tweets, because they curate the best industry content! Also, make it your mission to adopt a new skill like graphic design/ photography, type design, whatever floats your boat — the folks at #MM are super encouraging and willing to let you experiment, learn and grow.

What project or skill from your MM internship are you using now?

A bunch of them, ranging from basic skills to major projects. Trying out Canva for the first time at Metter Media made me realize my love for design, differentiating copy between tweets for twitter and blog posts for #MMBlog gave me more clarity about what I wanted to write. Most importantly, working on the portfolio project made me think like a social media manager and gave me a better outlook on how I was supposed to integrate research and insights into a strategic plan.

What is your favorite social media channel and why?

Instagram without a doubt — I’ve been on it for seven years now, and I love how the platform has evolved over the years, and made itself relevant with the changing times. Quick, snackable content aided by pictures is what I’ve grown to connect with and the platform accurately provides me with all that. Whether it’s influencers, artists, organic content by brands (or even paid for that matter), I love the idea of ideas being curated in a creative manner.

Would you rather fight one horse-sized duck or 100 duck-sized horses?

I’d probably just sit there all confused and amused by the sheer size of a gigantic duck, and get the duck to question it’s existence but yes, a horse-sized duck would be fun to fight. I’m chatty that way so I’d probably be excited to take it to the The Public Garden and convince it that it has family there.

Over the next couple of months we are going to be spotlighting our amazing past interns and catch up with where they are now. To read more about them, stay tuned!
