Hey there, fellow social media enthusiasts! Buckle up, because it’s time for the #MMSocialReport. In this week’s roundup, we learn which feature Twitter users are really asking for, how Facebook plans to track your store visits, and we take a look at how the world has fallen in love with one British Grandma’s polite Google searches. All this and more below!
1. Twitter will let you retweet yourself but everyone just wants an edit button
By@karissabe via @mashable
On Tuesday, Twitter announced that users are now able to retweet themselves – with a retweet of a post sent out by the official network’s account in 2009, which had announced the original retweet feature. Although this feature does not negatively affect users, they’ve been quick to point out its uselessness and instead are demanding an edit button. What feature would you like to see Twitter implement next? Comment below and share your thoughts!
2. Facebook’s new ads will track which stores you visit
By @KurtkkWagner8 via @Recode
Facebook ads are on the move, as the site just released an ad update Tuesday specific to offline shopping. Advertisers can now include interactive maps displaying physical store locations in the hopes that users will visit them. Facebook will use the phone’s location services to track how many users saw the ad and then visited the store. Finally, Facebook wants to connect shoppers with in-store purchases with a new Facebook API, called the Offline Conversions API. The site still plans to drive online sales, but its efforts are expanding in line with their mission of taking over the world. What do you think of these new ads? Are they good for business or just a little too stalker-ish?
3. Microsoft to acquire LinkedIn for $26b
By @aghoshal via @thenextweb
Microsoft has announced its plan to acquire LinkedIn for a whopping $26 billion! The company said the professional networking site will continue to operate as usual and the current CEO, Jeff Weiner, will remain in his position reporting to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. The transaction is expected to close at the end of 2016. What do you think Microsoft will bring to the LinkedIn table?
4. New Research Shows Social Media Succeeds Long Term More Than Short Term
We are always on the hunt for more social media stats to improve our strategies, and Social Media Examiner just published a jackpot of info! The site updated their annual Social Media Marketing Industry Report, a 57-page document that despite displaying a much different participant pool than previous years, is chock full of interesting data points and trends. For instance, did you know 50% of social media marketers plan to experiment with live video this year? (Are you one of them?) Another finding states that social media succeeds more in the long term. This is good news for marketers, proving that if you stick with your efforts, success will be on the horizon.
5. Internet falls in love with British grandma’s polite Google search
By Jenni Ryall via @mashable
And in lighthearted internet news this week, the internet fell in love with this British grandma’s polite Google search, and so have we! On June 9th from Tyldesley, England, @Push10Ben tweeted the image above with the caption, “Omg opened my Nan’s laptop and when she’s googled something she’s put ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. I can’t 😂😂😂”. 85-year-old May Ashworth just likes to treat her search bar with respect and we can’t see a problem with that, Keep Googling, May!
