Another week, another #MMSocialReport! This week’s report covers video taking over the free world, Instagram finally doing something about paid posts (RIP #sponcon), and more.
1. Instagram’s Archive feature is now available for everyone to hide embarrassing old photos
by @jake_k and @verge
Instagram is helping out everyone’s #throwbackthursday by releasing the Archive feature. Deleting poorly-performing photos is a common practice among teenagers, but now they’ll be able to archive them instead of deleting them entirely. The change isn’t revolutionary, but is a nice quality of life update — and as social media apps become more and more similar to each other, little changes matter a lot.
2. Instagram tries to beat secret celebrity #sponcon with new label
by @richmcc and @verge
Celebrity sponsorships on social media came into the spotlight this week when Mediakix released a report saying that a whooping 93% of sponsored posts were not labeled correctly. The report builds off of the now infamous Fyre Festival story, and how many Instagram models failed to label promotions of the events as ads. Any longtime Instagram user knows it’s a widespread issue. Fortunately, something is finally being done about it! Instagram will now place banners above sponsored posts. It’s another positive move for the photo site, especially considering many of its users are younger.
3. Time Inc to slash about 300 jobs across print and sales as part of major restructure around video
by @goodflo and @TheDrum
The writing has been in the sand for a while now, but the future of media is digital, and the future of digital is all video. The news industry is at a major turning point due to the decrease in print revenue, so big media outlets like Time Inc are starting stop investing in print in order to focus on digital media and video. Everyone, from big corporations to individuals, should think about investing in skills like video editing and social media (#BetterGetMetter).
4. Twitter’s latest redesign makes the iOS app look more like Android
by @CaseyNewton and @verge
The latest Twitter means good news for those of us who like consistency in our lives … and bad news for those of us who despise change in any form. The update brings a major change to the look of the platform, smoothing out the differences between iOS, Android, TweetDeck, and TwitterLite. There’s also a general facelift with changes to the typeface and minor tweaks to some icons like the reply button (going from an arrow to a speech bubble). However, the update lacks the one thing we’d all like: the ability to edit tweets. Please, Twitter, we’re begging you!
