Greetings fellow social media nerds! Welcome to this week’s #MMSocialReport, where we take a look at what’s outraging Snapchat users, Wimbledon live on Twitter, and what talented designers did with the new Instagram logo. This and more below!
1. Snapchat introduces Memories so you can save and share old photos
By @karissabe via @mashable
This past Tuesday, Snapchat announced its latest feature called Memories, which allows users to save their own snaps for later sharing, and lets users share photos from their camera roll as well. The announcement has left many fans upset, believing it destroys one of the core features that made the app so good – the ability to be in the moment, and to let that moment disappear.
2. Twitter started its live coverage of Wimbledon today
By @maffei_lucia via @techcrunch
On Thursday, Twitter decided to do a soft launch of its sports live-streaming tool starting with Day 9 of Wimbledon. There seem to be some kinks in new feature, however, seeing as users were left in the dark with no announcement of the live-streaming event available. Additionally #Wimbledon only resulted in a plethora of enthusiastic tweets about Roger Federer’s comeback against Marin Cilic. So far, the best way to find the link is to search “Twitter” and “Wimbledon,” then select “Live @ Wimbledon Day 9.” We think this live-streaming feature is pretty cool, but could it have been executed better? What do you think?
3. What’s New in Social? Platforms Are Raising the Bar on Personalization
By @lisa_marcyes via @marketo
As social networks constantly change, so do the expectations of buyers. How does each platform keep up with its user base? Marketo.com came up with a list of how four social sites are stepping up their personalization capabilities in order to stay relevant in the ever-changing social landscape.
4. Twitter Moments fails to gain traction with advertisers
Remember how we all freaked out about Twitter Moments? The feature, which launched a little over six months ago, seems to have died down, already losing the enthusiasm of its advertisers, who say Twitter is asking for too much money to be in the curated section of the site dedicated to trending tweets. Twitter did find some willing brands when it first launched the feature, but the $1 million buy-in hasn’t been sustainable. Perhaps that lightning bolt will disappear after all.
5. Designers Respond To The New Instagram Logo With Alternatives
Continuing the internet outrage over social media changes, it was no subtle update when Instagram went through a complete redesign of their logo recently. The former retro-style camera got a rainbow facelift and the public went wild. A couple designers took matters into their own hands and constructed 15 new alternative logos for Instagram, which stay true to the original camera logo, but with a modern twist.
Does the new Snapchat update enrage you? Are you going to start a petition to change Instagram’s logo to an artist’s rendering? Let us know what you think of this week’s news in the comments.
