Metter Media Social Report, July 14, 2017

#MMSocialReport

It’s Friday and that means…. the #MMSocialReport. This week was a hectic week for the social world, especially Facebook. We saw Facebook reveal the ability to capture emotions via facial scanning to offer emojis, plans for Messenger Ads to go global, and how to upload your own GIFs. Twitter tagged along with an update to filtering notifications and Google Earth announced big plans for Google Earth stories.

1. Patents Reveal How Facebook Wants To Capture Your Emotions, Facial Expressions And Mood

by @cebsilver via @forbes

Facebook has been granted the patents to a number of — some, alarmingly creepy — patents for the mobile app. The social media giant now has the power to design tech that would: predictively add emojis and change font type and size based on typing speed and other emotions and movement, scan a users face to serve up content based on the emotions detected, and capture your emotions through a selfie and offer emojis from the face detection.

2.  Clean Up the Twitter Garbage With New Notification Filters

by @amoscaritolo via @Entrepreneur

Twitter continues to do some weeding with an update to the platform’s filtering capabilities. The newest change allows users to opt in (or out) of disabling notifications from essentially spam accounts – accounts that are “new” or from users who are not following you.

3. Messenger Ads are Going Global

via @SMExaminer

After successful tests in Thailand and Australia, Facebook has announced that Messenger ads will be going global. Although still in beta, soon businesses large and small will be able to extend their reach to audiences abroad via Facebook Messenger.

4. You Can Now Upload GIFs Directly On Facebook

via @wersm

It’s here: the ability to upload GIFs to Facebook without a host provider (aka Giphy). The feature is only currently available on desktop but nonetheless, it is possible to now post that cool GIF saved to your desktop to Facebook. The process is simple: upload the GIF as you would with any image, and Facebook will automatically recognize it as a GIF.

5. Google Earth Could Let You Post Your Stories Across the Map in the Near Future

by @bdwilliams910 via @mashableTech

Google has proposed bigger and better features for Google Earth in lieu of the launch of the brand’s Voyager tool. Future plans include a story feature like no other – one that lets you post statuses, photos, and videos as it tracks them to your geographic location on its map as it adds them to the collective history of that location on the planet.
