1. Facebook Promises to Fight Hate Speech Against Refugees
by @mattpetronzio via @mashable
On January 18th, Facebook’s COO Sheryl Sandberg announced that Facebook has created the European “Online Civil Courage Initiative” in collaboration with human rights organizations and research institutions. By cracking down on hate speech and online extremism, the company appears to fund and support powerful NGOs to fight radicalism online.
“Deleting content won’t make the hatred go away,” Sandberg said. “We can’t just treat the symptoms — we have to treat the cause.”

by @cortneyclift via @britandco
Did you recently gain an Insta-follower only to realize moments later that they unfollowed you? Talk about #shady. In an attempt to curve this technology tragedy, Instagram has unveiled new features within its search. You can now see who’s following you, how many followers they have, and whether they are verified on Instagram. Looking to see what else is new on the ‘gram’s search features? @britandco gives insight.
3. Nielsen Will Add Facebook to Its Social Ratings to Measure Conversation Around TV
Neilsen has been following the Twitter conversation surrounding television for a while now; however, they recently unleashed plans to incorporate Facebook posts, including those shared with friends and family, with followers, and publicly, and are expected to be available in markets where the company’s Twitter TV Ratings service currently exists. Nielsen also plans to eventually integrate data from Instagram. The social media integration is an attempt to better gauge the effectiveness of their social marketing strategies.
4. 100M Live Broadcasts In, Periscope Streams New Life Into Your Twitter Feed
by @drew via @TechCrunch
Periscope took off in 2015 with 100 million live broadcasts, and it comes as no surprise that this live-streaming app is pushing towards partnering with Twitter. As of this week, Periscope is now automatically live-streaming on Twitter, which is bound to make your feed much noisier than before. The marriage between both social media apps paves the way for an unfiltered view into people’s lives by documenting every second of what’s going on.
