Kick off the holiday season with social news from Metter Media! In this week’s #MMSocialReport, Taylor Swift takes selfies for a cause, Instagram influences baby names, and more.
1. People are naming their babies after Instagram filters
by @adhutchinson via @socialmedia2day
We love Crema as much as the next person, but maybe a little less than this trend. In 2015, there has been a rise in Instagram filter-related baby names. This includes a 75% rise in “Lux”, a contrast tool built into the app. Over the next few years, expect an increase in Ludwigs, Amaros, Reves, and Hudsons.
2. Facebook Messenger distinguishes itself with new features
by @adhutchinson via @socialmedia2day
With the rise of WeChat and WhatsApp, its clear that messaging apps are here to stay. As a result, Facebook has been upping the ante with its Messenger app. New features include money sharing, personalization, and social media integration. David Marcus, Vice President of Messaging Products at Facebook, feels that an increased sense of connectivity and integration between apps can keep users with Messenger for good.
3. This App Brings Advanced Search Back to Facebook
by @joshconstine via @techcrunch
Miss the ability to search by location, workplace, and more? “Search is Back” upgrades Facebook search by downgrading. The app allows users to tap into all of old Facebook’s features, as well as providing a good dose of nostalgia for those who have been there from the start.
4. Taylor Swift takes a selfie for conservationism
by @Charlie_Mock via @Mashable
After her recent music video release, Taylor Swift has drawn criticism for filming at a location populated by the endangered tuturiwhatu, AKA New Zealand dotterel. To prove she can responsibly interact with wildlife, Swift has shared a photo with a cockatoo. While the video production company has issued a statement about the endangered birds, this is T Swift’s only response.
5. “Last Message Received” might be the saddest Tumblr ever
by @chloebryan via @mashable
The last message received from a friend, family member, or ex is often the most heartbreaking. Emily Trunko, 15, manages Last Message Received, a depository for breakups, faded friendships, and loved ones who have passed away. If you check it out, beware: you might want to grab a box of tissues first.
