Busting 5 Social Media Myths

#HappyAprilFoolsDay!

It’s important to be able to spot the differences between social media myths & truths in order to set realistic expectations. To provide some perspective on this, we’ve compiled a list of 5 social media myths and their corresponding truths to help guide you while establishing a plan for your business.

1. You must be on every social media platform.

You actually only need to be where your customer / clients are. If your community isn’t active on a particular channel, you should not want to waste your time, money, and energy on it.

2. You have to post multiple times per day.

It’s more important to share consistent, quality content rather than flooding newsfeeds with irrelevant/un-engaging content. Quality over quantity is key. 🔑

3. You should ignore negative feedback.

It’s important to respond to every comment, positive or negative. Social media is all about communicating and allowing for conversations between a company and its customers. Even if you can’t make everyone happy, it’s so important for your brand to be seen listening and caring.

4. High follower count = successful business

The size of your following does not directly effect your overall social media strategy. It’s more important that it is built up of your ideal clients and loyal, brand advocates. This is who you want to connect and engage with, which ultimately decides the success of your strategy.

5. Social media is free

While yes, creating a channel doesn’t cost anything, successful social media is not free. Social media costs a lot of time, and on top of that there can be larger costs associated with building + maintaining your brand’s image. And when it comes to getting your content seen by new and more specific audiences, paid boosts and advertising are necessary to help your business reach the screens of your target demographic — people that may not have previously followed your brand.

What you have to remember about social media marketing is to have a clear strategy and understanding before you start! And be careful not to fall for any myths when setting your social expectations.
