Figuring out the Textdoor Neighbor trend, TikTok adds GIF integrations, possible regulation coming to social media, and … is Instagram changing its name? Social media might have been around for a while, but it continues to surprise us every week. Luckily for you, we’ve distilled the most important news for you, right here on this week’s social report.
1.TikTok Adds GIF Integration with Giphy to Add More Creative Capacity
by @adhutchinson via @socialmedia2day
TikTok continues to expand its creator-centric feature set by integrating the popular GIF repository into its app for creators. Short form video creators will now be able to add GIFs into their videos immediately. In our view, this was sorely needed addition to the feature set, and we’re excited to see how creators use this on the growing social video platform.
2. Oh Snap: U.S. senator proposes bill to ban Snapchat ‘Snapstreaks’
by @bryan_pietsch via @Reuters
Feel trapped into continuing Snapstreaks everyday? On Tuesday, Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) brought forward his ideas that Snapchat’s Snapstreaks and other media tools are causing negative habits to develop for users.
3. Facebook wants Portal to be the king of video calls, but there’s still work to do
by @kharijohnson via @VentureBeat
Facebook aims to create in-call experiences that compete with Google Assistant and Alexa. Facebook plans to introduce features to Portal like an AI-powered smart camera, smart volume, and AR effects. While some of these Portal features are cool, they still have room to grow if Facebook wants to enhance the social experience of video calls.
4. Instagram’s Name Will No Longer Just Be ‘Instagram’
via Complex
Never again will you able to forget which other platform owns Instagram. A rebrand will be renaming the content-sharing platform to ‘Instagram from Facebook’. This rebrand will also affect Whatsapp, a popular messaging app also acquired by Facebook. The purpose of the name change is to assure that users will know that all three companies are now one and the same.
5. Twitter is working on a snooze feature for when your tweets are too good
by @MathewKatz via @DigitalTrends
Twitter is creating a “snooze button” that can pause notifications from showing up on your phone. Twitter has just begun working on the “crossed out bell” that will appear in the upper-right corner of the notification tab. Users will be able to mute their push notifications for 1, 3, or 12 hours. For those who have had a tweet gain popularity or even go viral, this new feature will save people from the headache of dealing with rapid fire notifications popping on their phone.
