How did you get your start in social media?

I guess I kind of fell into it. I graduated from BU in 2012 with a degree in magazine journalism. Honestly, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I knew I liked being creative and writing and being on the internet. I starting interning at DigBoston during the day while still working my retail job at night and on the weekends, and after a couple months there I began to help out Lauren with the Dig’s website and social media. I got really into it, seeing how quickly I could schedule out a day of tweets or getting all of that issue’s stories online or what new funny internet thing was trending that I could quickly write up a blog post on. The rest is history …

When did you join Metter Media?

February 2014, after I gave Lauren a fated PowerPoint presentation over bagels and lox. She would always talk, usually while walking over to JJ Foley’s after a long day at the Dig, about starting Metter Media and how we would be such a good team. Turns out she was very right!

In your opinion, what makes Metter different from other social media agencies?

Many things. But specifically, how much we care.

It sounds silly and obvious and probably a bit cliché — but there’s something nearly obsessive about how we view the work we put out at Metter Media.

It needs to be the best, it needs to fit the client and their voice and their goals, and it needs to be creative and something that will stand out from the noise. Not always an easy thing to do, but I think we make it work pretty well.

Owning a business is a HUGE responsibility — how do you do it and stay sane?

Well, the ‘stay sane’ part is debatable. But just like Lauren said, having a good partner is everything. I would never want to do this alone; I don’t think I would survive. Huge snaps to women heading their businesses alone — you are so strong.

I think having a good partner you can lean on and complain to and think out loud to, who cheers your successes with you and then you can complain to again, is super important.

And of course working out (@otfbrighton obsessed), #selfcare in whichever form it comes for you (mine is expensive skin care), and just being able to step back once in awhile and put everything in perspective. At the end of the day, everything will be alright and you’ll get through it.

Any advice for future women business owners?

Don’t do it! OMG I’m just kidding, totally do it. But make a plan beforehand, get your stuff in order (taxes, bank accounts, the essentials), make sure you either have a partner or mentor or team of people you trust that you can lean on and work with. You may start a business alone, but you can’t succeed alone.

It truly takes a village. For us it’s the strength and skill and dedication of our team that makes it all work.

The Metter Media team at our #MM5Years celebration

Proudest moment so far?

100% I would say our 5-year anniversary party (#MM5years) this past November. We were so lucky to be surrounded by clients and friends and family that we love, along with our amazing team. Looking around that room there was not one person there I didn’t appreciate with everything in me. And then standing by Lauren’s side as we (nervously) made our speech, it’s just insane who we were and who we’ve become. We’ve definitely been through a lot, haha.
